The University of Vienna (UV) is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Research and education at UV encompasses a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, ranging from theology, jurisprudence, economics, computer science, to the humanities and to the social and natural sciences. The University of Vienna participates in the SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme (more than 300 bilateral agreements), is a member of the UNICA network and has partnership agreements with 50 more universities all over the world.
The Vice-Rectorat for Teaching and International Affairs of the University of Vienna has included eLearning in the general institutional strategy as an approach to a further improvement of teaching quality across the institution. Therefore, the „Projektzentrum Lehrentwicklung“ (LE) has been installed a strategy unit of the Vice-Rectorat and home of the „eLearningCenter“ of the University of Vienna. The LE collaborates closely with the Central Information Unit (ZID) in both, training/support and implementation strategy. Both units were also charged with the evaluation and choice of  a VLE solution for the institution as a whole.
Apart from supplying training and support across the University of Vienna, the unit is regularly represented at both, national and international conferences on eLearning and has developed particular expertise in collecting and summarizing current developments and in reviewing internal and external eLearning projects, implementation strategies and applied educational theories.
